Argos is a satellite-based location estimation and data collection system. Microwave Telemetry, Inc. (MTI) manufactures avian and marine tracking devices that transmit data to an Argos-equipped constellation of satellites; devices that transmit to Argos are called PTTs (Platform Transmitter Terminals). Argos receives data from a PTT and estimates its location at the time of transmission based on the Doppler shift of the signal frequency received during the passing of one of the polar-orbiting, sun-synchronous satellites. Additionally, some of our PTTs are equipped with a GPS antenna and can calculate higher-resolution locations via the Global Positioning System. Argos then makes these data (PTT-recorded sensor data and estimated locations) available to the user. We also supply a copy of our GPS Parsing Software with each order of GPS PTTs for easy decoding of the raw data.
MTI transmitters that use the Argos satellite system are Solar PTTs, Solar Argos/GPS PTTs, Battery Powered PTTs, Implantable PTTs, and marine PSATs (pop-up satellite archival tags).
Users of Argos PTTs must have an Argos account and an Argos ID number for each PTT. Argos IDs are issued by CLS. CLS (Collecte Localisation Satellites) in France is the company that operates the Argos Data Collection System. All correspondence regarding the Argos system (opening an account, requesting IDs, accessing data, etc.) should be directed to CLS.
It is the user’s responsibility to obtain and monitor the Argos account and collect all transmitter data retrieved by the Argos system.
