Storing PTTs

Apart from during predeployment testing, the PTT should be turned off until it is placed on a bird. Place the magnet over the word "STOP" located on the side of the transmitter. You should use the button magnet shipped with the PTT. Never use a bar magnet because the magnetic field from the magnet would be at 90° to the switch, resulting in an unreliable closure of the switch.

Storing the unit at low ambient temperature is beneficial for the batteries. Solar PTTs should be stored out of their boxes and exposed to direct sunlight (outdoors) for four hours a week to maintain a charge in the batteries. Solar rechargeable batteries can be irreparably damaged if the charge in them is allow to drop too low.

IMPORTANT -- Prior to deployment the PTT should be allowed to run for one complete cycle within a month before being attached to the animal. Be sure to check the Argos data to confirm the PTT is functioning properly.
