2012 MTI Avian and Marine Tracking Conference

Abstract Booklet

Conference Objective

To promote an exchange of scientific information among researchers using satellite telemetry.

Date:  March 27, 2012 through March 30, 2012

The conference will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Columbia, Maryland. There will be three themes for the conference: Avian Tracking, Marine Tracking, and Technical Information; with timing as shown in the figure above.

Tuesday will feature avian tracking presentations. Wednesday (all day), and Thursday (afternoon), will feature both avian and marine tracking presentations. We will overlap themes on Thursday morning for the technical presentations pertaining to both fields, the Argos system, and the new products being released. Friday morning will feature a marine geolocation workshop. Space for this workshop is limited.

A detailed schedule will be posted when the sessions have been finalized.

Attachment and Harnessing Workshop

Tuesday afternoon will feature a workshop on attachment and harnessing of transmitters to birds by Libby Mojica from the Center for Conservation Biology at The College of William and Mary. Libby has refined her methods over many years and has had great success with tag retention. She will cover attachment techniques, finding and testing harness materials and harness creation. We also
invite attendees to bring examples of their own harnesses that have either worked or not worked in the past to share with the group.

Marine Geolocation Workshop

This workshop is for pop-up archival tag users and will be focused on the use of several R libraries used for estimation and correction of light-based geolocations from fish tags. Benjamin Galuardi and Tim Lam (from the Large
Pelagics Research Center, UMass Amherst) will be hosting this workshop. Attendees will walk through light-based geolocation, state space models (Kalman filters) and will build R scripts for import, analysis and display of fish tag data. Use of sea surface temperature and bathymetry for track correction will be explored. Finally, Tim will present an overview of Tagbase; a relational database for management, visualization and data portal of electronic tag data. This workshop requires some prior knowledge of R, and will require the download of several open source software packages. The Tagbase portion requires Microsoft Access (part of Microsoft Office, any versions from 2000 or above).

Registration Information

All conference attendees, including speakers, are required to register. Registration entitles attendees to all sessions, a copy of the conference proceedings, and admission to the welcome dinner reception on Wednesday evening. There will be hosted breakfast and lunch each day.

There is a $50 fee for registration payable in U.S. dollars (cash or personal check) at conference check-in.
Use our convenient on-line form to register.

Call for Abstracts

Abstracts are being accepted for presentations describing the use of our PTTs in animal tracking. The Deadline for Abstracts is February 7, 2012.

For your submission, email an abstract, not to exceed 250 words, in the body of an email to support@microwavetelemetry.com using the subject line, "Abstract for MTI 2012 Conference."

Scholarship for Two Students

We would like to sponsor two graduate students to attend the conference by providing their registration, food, and lodging. Students are to provide their own transportation. Selection will be made by committee. Deadline for application is January 31, 2012. Click here for the application.

The conference will be held at the Sheraton Columbian Town Center Hotel (www.sheraton.com/ColumbiaMaryland). A block of Traditional style rooms has been reserved for conference attendees at a rate of $129 (plus hotel and local tax) per night.
