Our second generation GPS unit, introduced in 2003, weighs less than 45 grams, making it suitable for use on many species in both home range and long range studies. This unit retains all of the functionality of our 70g version. It records GPS positions together with speed, heading and altitude at hourly intervals. Every third day these recorded data are transmitted to Argos on an SiV™ schedule. We can even program it to take as few as one GPS position a day and every few days transmit these recorded positions to Argos. Location accuracy is no longer an issue as GPS fixes are accurate to +/- 15m.
This model has been successfully deployed to track many species including Houbara bustards, wood storks and various birds of prey.
In 2003 we also introduced our 50g patagial mount version which was specially developed for condors.
