PTT-100 38-44 gram Implantable PTT

The implantable PTT was first
developed in 1992 for tracking
Spectacled Eiders.
Many species of birds, especially aquatic diving species, have been found not to tolerate harness attached backpack transmitters. In the early 1990s, we developed an implantable PTT based on the 30 gram NANO PTT to overcome this problem. The units were first used by Dr. Margaret Petersen to track the migration and find the wintering location of the spectacled eider. Since then these units have been used on various other species as small as the diminutive harlequin duck.
Optimized for operation at body temperature, the electronics for this PTT are hermetically sealed in a separate housing. The transmitter is then "potted" with the batteries. Due to this potted construction, various configurations are possible. For deep diving species the housing can be filled to ensure that it is pressure proofthis however adds about four grams to the overall weight.
These units are now available with the new Lix2™ power source option, which overcomes the problems of battery degradation from exposure to body temperature for the life of the PTT.
To extend the lifetime of the PTT the Nano and multi-season duty cycle timer options are also available. (See separate section on Duty Cycle Timers.)

Like the larger PTTs, this unit is fitted with temperature, battery voltage and activity sensors. Interpretation of the data from the temperature and activity sensors can be used to identify periods of flight or other behavior.
